Mobile Broadband Will Improve Global Economic Conditions

GSMA’s yearly event – a meeting place for all those who are part of the global mobile industry, ended successfully last week. Most of the focus however was on the GSMA Leadership Summit, which has always been the cornerstone of the event. The summit brings together CEOs from all over the world to discuss issues related to the industry, and the thought with which the meeting ended this year was that of mobile broadband helping in improvement of the global economic conditions.

It is believed that since players in the private sector run most of the global mobile industry, increased efforts and investments from their side could lead to mobile broadband helping in economic growth. However, a lack of government support from many countries has become a major constraint, and it is high time that the issue of broadcast spectrum release is handled in a manner that supports the industry instead of creating new hurdles for growth. A strong platform for investments also needs to be developed by regulatory support from the governments.

Rob Conway, CEO and member of the GSMA board believes that if the governments give the required support, then spectrum standardization across the world would help manufacturers in reducing their production costs by developing equipment that can be used in most countries.

How much the mobile industry can do to help the global economy is an open question, but in the current scenario, the governments should welcome any help that they can get.
